I’m pretty sure that I discovered Delhi’s best-kept secret last week. No, it’s not another pretentious bar- lounge nor is it another Asian delivery chain. Tucked away in the narrow lanes of Hauz Khas (and pretty much the only reason to visit the market), is a small traditional Vietnamese restaurant, Little Saigon.
A tiny no-nonsense space, Little Saigon reminded me of a simple family dining room (disclaimer: not suited for those mega-extended families). It is run by Chef and powerful woman, Hana Ho who was born and brought up in Vietnam. She spent quite a few years as the primary chef at Blue Ginger, Taj Palace before taking the leap into starting her own little thing. *bows down*
Coming to the food- hands down, one of the BEST meals I’ve eaten in a while.
Here’s what I ordered: The fresh summer rolls with shrimp and meat, the Little Saigon Plating, Roasted Pork Belly, Caramelised Ginger Chicken and their special milk coffee with glass jelly. Major #foodgasm!!
Unlike the tall claims of freshness made in most menus- I could actually taste the freshness and authenticity of the ingredients here. Generous use of herbs and veggies + interesting flavours and textures. The great part is that Vietnamese cooking involves a lot of steaming and boiling and not much oil and dairy, so you don’t feel uncomfortably stuffed even after a huge meal. In fact, Vietnamese cuisine one of the healthiest in the world.
In 2018, I plan to step away from the usual circuit of Delhi hangout spots (the ones where you bump into half your school) to explore more secret haunts like this! I’ll keep you guys in the loop. Stay tuned and watch this space for more.
